It's been a very long time since I posted anything on here, but Go Skate Day 2012 seems like an excellent reason to get back into it. Last year was my first official Go Skate Day (although I'm sure I've skated on June 21 many times past). I blogged about it
here.
I think I started the day out earlier this year than last year. I was up around 10 and ready to head out by 11. With 2 boards, 2 skate towels, a helmet, knee pads, and a cooler I was set for the next 14 hours. My cat was not so sure about the 14 hours thing, so she stuck around and stayed home instead. I started the day off by heading over to my local park in Dunwoody.
Brook Run is an excellent park and it definitely attracts a lot of
talent from around Atlanta. I got warmed up with a run in the pool.

This year Brook Run held a series of competitions, starting with the Euro gap. This was excellent! I personally can only ollie up this thing, but as you can see there was a lot going on. The tre-flip (or as we used to simply call them 360 flips) was a popular favorite. These pictures were two of my favorites throughout the day. There's some sort of really beautiful Bruce Lee thing going on when you capture a flip trick at the right moment. I was really impressed with pretty much everyone who entered this contest, it seems to me that the younger kids are so much more consistent than we were (90s generation). I can only speak for myself and those I skated with, but I don't remember skating with anyone who could throw down a 360 flip consistently enough to land one in less than 2 tries.
Speaking of consistency, I was mesmerized by this craziness that went down directly after the competition. As some people claim, the best tricks happen directly after a competition when everyone is just still enjoying the vibe. I've only rarely seen anyone hit this ledge, but in this few seconds I saw three kids hit it in sequence.
From there, I headed over to MARTA and split over to Inman park. A short skate away and a walk under Freedom Parkway bridge led me to the Old 4th Ward park. I love the atmosphere at this place. As soon as I skate up, there is free food and Marley is blaring. This guy was serving up some of the best pulled pork I've ever eaten in my life. It was absolutely scrumptious. O4W always treats you right. There's always a lot of great fellas to skate with over there as well.
After another 6 hours skating the flow bowl and getting my first tile in the deep end over at O4W, the lights shut off. Of course, Go Skate Day doesn't end when the parks close, so I skated back over to Inman Park and rode the train back home. Just to make sure the day ended with a bang, I skated around the 5 points station a little bit and was shocked that the police didn't seem to care or notice. In retrospect, this year's Go Skate Day was even better than the last!
